Description
So first there was the hit song - We Built This City [on Rock n' Roll] by Starship. 80s music at its best, had a great music video to go along with it.
Then came the Threadless t-shirt - 'A city built on Rock n' Roll would be structurally unsound.' The shirt won me over with its pun, its architectural / engineering humor, and the allusion to the great 80s song.
Now here is the cake to tie it all together - a city built on rock and roll. Like I said, I love the song and the t-shirt and I decided on a topsy turvy cake to make it 'structurally unsound.' Each tier is made of 3 round cakes [red velvet on the bottom, dark chocolate on the top] and layered with buttercream frosting; the top tier is the city skyline and the bottom is, well, rock and roll. I did plan out the color schemes for the inside of the cake, though you can't really tell because the cutting ended up being messy in the end.
Each tier is frosted with buttercream for a gradient effect and hot knifed so that it is smooth. The skyline and concert crowd are piped on with icing, filled, and smoothed as well. The final step was to add the words that started it all.
