Star Power cake by Aja Green

Description

So I got a litte wrapped up in this design. I wanted to do it because of the awesome robot with the lit up star and eyes! I thought it'd be so great to do it in 3D. I baked a poundcake in a loaf pan and carved him out of that. Buttercream and fondant and then painted with black food coloring. I had leftover poundcake batter so I baked his feet in big cupcakes tins and stacked and carved them down. Buttercream. Fondant. I cut the robots legs and feet to fit like a puzzle piece when stacked together. I glued them with some gumpaste that I dissolved in warm water.
By getting wrapped up I mean, I pictured this like it was my favorite Saturday morning cartoon. Star and her Robot live on the moon and are fueled by the power of the stars, and fight for justice all over the universe.
Star, the girl. Is cut out of gumpaste and I hand painted the smallest details with a toothpick. (who knew I could paint anything?!) I put a piece of fondant on the board and stood her up in that.
I made a three layer crescent moon shaped background cake, which came in handy for support of the robots arms. Chocolate and yellow cake with cookies and cream and vanilla buttercream filling. Covered in marshmallow fondant. The black background part of the cake is sponge painted with a crumpled piece of paper towel to look all starry.
I also made rock candy by boiling sugar (with black food coloring) and poured it in glass jars till it crystallized about a week later. I chipped the pieces out of the jars with a knife and placed my "moon rocks" amoungst the crushed Oreo 'moon dirt'.
I crushed white Lifesavers and put them in a star mold and robot eye mold made of foil and melted them in the oven. Placed the lights behind both. The only problem? They're blinking lights and I couldnt get a picture with them both fully on. (d'oh!)I cracked the background cake a little to look like the robots hands pounded into it. It's all edible except the lights, and the tooth pick supporting the robots left arm in the air.
This took...for.ev.ER. I worked on it every night after the kids went to sleep for about a week and hid the pieces in differnt hard to reach locations around the kitchen. (they are sneaky!) Can't wait till next year!
