Strength In Numbers cake by ReAnne Hinton

Description

This is my second entry. I had left over materials from making the first cake as well as I found this amazing Doctor-Hoo shirt. (I'm a big Doctor Who fan). I started off by baking a 13x9 vanilla sheet cake and covering that with a dark chocolate butter cream. The next day I make a lot of marshmallow fondant and began dying it. I started making the Owls and realized what I had gotten myself into. I would classify myself as a beginner; so, after acknowledging my skill level I began to rethink my cake. I had seen the Strength in Numbers design, but had wanted to do that on a round cake, but in the wise words of Tim Gunn I "made it work". I carved a shark out of the original sheet cake--relayed the blue fondant and began cutting out fish shapes.
This was labor intensive! I was cutting out fish for 2 1/2 hours! Then came the fun part: making the big shark out of the fish.
I am super pleased with how this cake turned out. Given what it started out as and it was completely changed half way through I thoroughly pat myself on the back.
My parents can't wait till I go back to college because while both are on diets I forced them to eat my cake in a mini-celebration. Thanks Threadless for this super cute idea.
