Description
First I was sure I would. Then not. Then again - yes. And then once again...
I do not make many cakes a year and to get started is usually the worst part. Often it even ends there - it never begins.
Still I did make it through all the battles with myself this time. Not to mention the greatest of them all: deciding WHAT to choose as a design. The collection with Threadless designs is not only huge, it is criminally huge! And there are so many of them that formally cry to you: choose me, meee, I would be so fun to make, pleeeeeease!!!
Well, I have surely made myself many enemies amongst the T- shirts, for I only chose one of them, the Communist party itself.
Why?
Uhm...it was kind of challenging to try the faces and then: when and where else would a man get the possibility to make a cake with these funny guys ;) on the top of it!!!
So Lenin & co. it was.
This time I decided to be more creative and to "build" the rest of the design, that was not seen on the original picture. My thoughts went to that ancient myth about the word, being held by elephants on the back of a turtle. I replaced the elephants with all those people, struggling under the cynical party, held over them by those big fellows.
The turtle is made of a cake, baked mainly on yolks and hazelnuts, instead of eggs and flour. (There are some prunes between the layers.)
The little cake on the top of it is a chocolate cake.
To put the pieces together I have used ganache and an orange cream, mixed with butter. This one is used both inside and outside the cake, under the fondant.
The real challenge was "the Earth". I wanted it to be as light as possible and ended up with...meringue. Never have I seen, nor have I heard of this done before, still I decided to give it a try. And it actually went quite fine. We like meringue in our family and together with the orange cream it is a delicious combination.
All the fondant is homemade, I have used MMF, a simple gelatin fondant and some combination of them both, plus some pettinice.
No dowels and no separators are used in the cake.
The flag is actually hold on place by a pastillage - mast. It cold not last for ages, even though the flag itself was thin as a cigarette paper, but I wanted to try it just for the fun of it.
No way for me to say how long time I have used on the job. It's a work, made over more than one day, things need to dry before one goes further with them, so I do not know how many hours I have used. I have no idea of the weight of the cake either, but it was heavy...Its height was about 50cm.
I was lucky to get some friends home, to help us with the eating, but still we did not manage even 1/3 of the job. I, though, am working hard with the globe, I do my best. And I am doing really great! We are talking about more than 10 egg whites......and all the sugar in them :o And...no, I don't even want to think about it...
So that's it.
Thank you for your time and thanks to Threadless - Threadcakes for making this fantastic event possible!
