Recently Deceased cake by Natissa Small

Description

I was checking out the huge list of eligible designs when my computer crashed after printing Recently Deceased. I hmmed and hawwed about it for a few hours as I was trying to do a last minute entry in the span of two naps that my toddler would take over the weekend! I started the cake late Saturday afternoon. In total the decorating took me about three hours...but then another three or so hours of baking and frosting. Six or so hours in total. It may take me six hours to clean up my kitchen.

To begin, I cut out paper templates of the sand worm. I cut the basic shape out of fondant and left it to dry for a few hours. I baked off two jelly roll pans of cake, one batch vanilla and one batch chocolate. I used my only small cake round to cut out 11 layers..I layer was so over baked it was like a (really tasty) cookie. I whipped up a batch of peanut butter buttercream while they baked.

I cleaned up my initial cut fondant and made a little house. I hand painted the sand worm and house. I left these to dry overnight. Crumb coated the very crumbly cake layers and left that overnight to hopefully harden up some.

Made another batch of peanut butter buttercream and frosted the cake. Smoothed out the frosting with a wet spatula and threw some brown sugar at the cake. It wasn't exactly the effect I was looking for but I went with it.

Applied the sand worm and the house. Put a thin line of green frosting in front of the house.

Promptly cut cake and enjoyed delicious peanut butter-y cake!
