Description
I really, really wanted to turn this design into a 3D cake and it was hard to think of the perfect design that wouldn't require a whole lot of non-edible support. In the end though, I love this design that incorporates just a bit more of that iconic scenery we all know and love. The side of the cake is hand painted to resemble the earth of newer versions of the game. The yellow and red flowers are fire flowers.
This dark chocolate cake with triple chocolate buttercream is wrapped in fondant. The sides are hand painted. The top is crowned with gumpaste grass. The fondant-gumpaste shrooms are in a fairy ring with exactly 29 mushrooms to total 29 UP! The hand painted banner is gumpaste.
It took me a few days to make the cake, I never really keep track of time put in very well but I started on Thursday and finished Sunday. I did use toothpicks in the mushrooms as I originally meant to transport the cake some distance, and just didn't want them to fall off the cake. The toothpicks weren't needed but at least we plucked them off the cake quickly before slicing into the most supremely delicious, and fragrant chocolate cake I've ever had.
