"Mum! can you make my friend a birthday cake... with a skull" was the cry from my daughter. So I turned to Threadless for inspiration and sure enough there it was. I loved the woodgrain background, the colours and it had a skull and roses.
Baked a couple of choc fudge cakes, layered with choc buttercream & covered in choc ganache. As the cake was taller than it was wide I went with the wrap method for applying the fondant and once the top circle was on it took on the look of a barrel, finished off the effect with a gel paste and vodkha mix.
The skull, bones, guns, roses were all made with fondant with a bit of tylose added and then painted. I'd always steered clear of Royal Icing but bit the bullet (pun intended) and had a go and of course all my fears unfounded, it is great to work with.
