Memento Mori cake by Lynn Smith

Description

This is my first time entering threadcakes and what a fantastic selection of designs to inspire I had a lot of trouble picking one.
I started off with the roses I used flower paste and made buds then left them to dry then rolled out petals and gradually added them until it looked the way I wanted then I made leaves and dusted everything to get the shading and wired them into sprays, I choose to make maderia cake as its easy to carve and I made blueberry buttercream as I thought it would look good when cut. I Carved the skull out of 7in round cakes layered and then covered in thin layer of marzipan to hold it all together before covering in fondant,I put the skull on cake and piped grass around the head and left to dry overnight then I airbrushed the black shadows, I made the bird out of rkt and covered it in royal icing and used lollypop sticks for the legs, when it was dry I used dusting powder and food colouring to get the colouring right, it was not easy to put together the bird did not want to stay there but I got there in the end, the whole thing was done over 5 days the flowers alone took about 20 hours and the bird was the hardest to get right he probably took 10 hours, butterfly was easiest 10 minutes.
