This is my third year entering Threadcakes i just love the designs, so much choice. I instantly fell in love with this design because of its cuteness, love the whale pooping out the skeleton.
i decided to do a tiered cake for this even though its a 2d design because i thought it would be a bit dull if it was just flat down on a regular cake.
i baked a lemon madeira as this is my favourite type of cake to make (and my kids) i stacked the tiers with chocolate Ganache and covered the sides with it aswell. I covered the cakes with Sugarpaste, my first time covering a tall cake (the bottom tier was 6in tall)
i decided that airbrushing the cake would probably work best as the picture is not a true solid colour. i mixed two shades of blue (Americolour) and some white and watered it down with water, after i had airbrushed the whole cake and it was still wet i took a piece of scrunched up cling film and sponged the sides with it to take off some colour, then left it to dry and gave it a second coat and finished it the same way, left it to dry overnight.
The Whale is made from Pastillage, i love this medium to work with especially in the damp weather as it doesn't wilt and keeps it shape no matter what. i made a little template of the whale and the water spout, cut them from Pastillage and left to dry overnight, i dried the whale on my baking tin as i wanted him to have the same curve as the cake.
when the whale was dry i airbrushed him and his water spout, i hand painted the whale's mouth and eyes then i used white chocolate to stick them in place. Now the fun part of hand painting the Pooping skeleton, i used white dust and lemon extract for this.
Getting a good photograph is usually the hardest part but it was a lovely bright sunny day so that helped, still ended up taking 40 "just to be sure"
The cake cutting was quiet this year as it was early morning but i did take the cake to my brothers house later in the day where it was devoured by everyone.
i worked on it over 3 and a half days, the hardest thing was the airbrushing as the cake was fully assembled so i had to protect the top tier and the board from getting any colour, i really enjoyed making this hope you like it.
