inksPIRATE cake by Melissa Spyhalski

Description

I first heard about the Threadcakes competition earlier this year and was super excited to challenge myself and create an entry. Because there are just so many designs to choose from, I finally let my boyfriend choose his favorite for the design of his birthday cake this year, which is how I finally landed on inksPIRATE.

I began by baking both chocolate and vanilla sheet cakes and then carving and stacking them to fit the shape of the design. A chocolate espresso buttercream was the glue that held it all together and then it was covered with homemade marshmallow fondant. I then made a woodgrain pattern out of fondant and cut out planks that would cover the pirate ship.

The sails were originally made out of rice paper but after having to re-do them many times because of cracking, I finally moved on to using a velum paper on skewers. The tentacles were made out of rice krispy treats, covered with fondant and then left to dry before being attached to the cake with skewers.

Overall I had a blast working on this cake and an even better time eating it. It was challenging at times but so worth all the time and effort that went into it to see everyones reactions.

Thanks for looking! :)
