Hello!
This is my first entry to a cake competition, so I'm very excited!
My entry is of a 2D cake. I've created spaces between the elements to give them a 'floating' sort of feel. When I saw the border of the design, I instantly knew it should look wood carved. So this is my first attempt at doing that. I have not done this technique before so this is was also a learning process for much cutting and layering and rendering. I am just a little above amateur if I were to put myself on a scale. I wish to be a full on professional cake decorator.
The good thing about this design was that I made all of the elements(made out of fondant) first and then baked my cake absolutely fresh (hazelnut chocolate ganache with a dark chocolate sponge) and then just started to pile them onto the cake as they dried. It was quite tricky getting the longer elements to 'float' above others. I had to balance them from three points atleast, so fear of breaking was always there. All of this was quite nerve wrecking. It took me three days to make this cake. I had to ensure the fondant was dry enough before it was placed. Overall I am happy with it enough to submit it.
