Description
I made this cake for my husband's Halloween birthday party, they are on the same day. He chose the design.
I thought I have a ton of time to complete the entire design, but life happened, with kids you never know. So I realized I'm running out of time, and in order to finish the cake for the birthday party I decided to make a simpler version of the original design. Despite this change I decided after all to submit the cake, I have many hours of work in it, nothing to loose.
The cake has a simple wooden center dowel, levels are separated in every for inch with cardboards and supported with wooden dowels.
3 different cake flavors, vanilla cake with lemon Swiss meringue butter cream, mocha-cinnamon cake with chocolate Swiss meringue butter cream, and mud chocolate cake with chocolate swiss meringue butter cream. Iced with dark chocolate ganache. I used home made modeling chocolate for the sculpting.
I sculpted the cake as I layered it, I hate to waste food, so I was try to be as precise as possible. I drew a 1:1 sketch from the design, this is what I used as a guidance.
I have no AC at home, so I put back to the fridge the cake time to time to chill it before I put the next layer on it.
I used mostly my ( very clean!) hands to smooth the ganache on the surface, it was my most effective way to do it :)
I sculpt for living (clay) but modeling chocolate is a different story. I used this medium only for small figures before, it was my first time to try to sculpt something like this in this size over a cake. All my respect for those cake artists who do this on daily base!
I baked the cakes on Tuesday, I layered and iced it on Wednesday,I sculpted over a 2 and half days period from Thursday to Saturday 2pm in my free time. ( I had a school Halloween, and my daughter's surgery as well in these days, plus to prepare my husband's Bday party...)
Like I wrote before I have no Ac, and despite my senses and experience I had to put the cake back to the fridge between sculpting times. It was sweating, but it started to be a problem only when I wanted to paint it...Fan, open door, open window, heat down, warm jacket, socks and hot cappuccino :) and I was able to finish it without loosing my mind.
I used powder food color with shortening to paint. I wasn't going for a perfect smooth surface, I wanted to achieve a more painting like look.
I wish I would have more time to finish the original design, but the cake was a huge hit on the party, and it made worth the whole thing :)
