Speed is Relative cake by Amber Wills

Description

Here we go again. This is my fourth year entering this exciting competition. Every year I choose a design that I know will challenge me and this one did certainly that. I decided to create these sculpted slow movers with a delicious chocolate buttermilk cake and Swiss meringue buttercream.

With a large dowel cut in four 1" pieces and my trusty hot glue gun, a cake drum and board (cut to size), a central threaded pipe and a flange(I believe that is what it is called, some thick floral wire, cling wrap(to cover internal structure for food safety) and a little imagination I built the support.

And then... I baked, built, stacked, sculpted and then covered the bodies in a 50/50 mix (giving me a longer working time to try and get the details perfect). Once they were sculpted using my new sugar shapers (thanks Mom) and ready for colour I used petal dusts with vodka and patiently added layers upon layers to try and really get that graphic look. I also built this cake with the perspective of the original design in mind.

My fiancé was excited once they were done because that meant cake eating time. All in all I spent about 25+ hours creating these cuties. Hope they made you smile. Happy caking! Lady Ambrosia
