Description
I made the "Water, Just Water" cake. I liked the design because I could easily imagine how it would look as a cake. The cake is a mango cake with mango buttercream frosting -- very yummy. I made three layers, each covered with white fondant. The baking process was relatively quick and the fire alarm only went off maybe ten times. My apartment has the most sensitive fire alarm ever, and I ended up having to pull it off the ceiling! I don't really like the taste of fondant that much, but I wanted the cake to be as smooth as possible. Everything is entirely edible, except for two dowels holding the three layers together. Once the cakes were baked, iced, and covered in fondant, I began decorating. It took up pretty much my entire afternoon, but what a fun day! The mountains and foothills are cake covered in colored fondant. The birds are made of marzipan. I'm rather proud of the clouds and the sunshine, which are made of meringue (the sun then covered in blue gum paste). The people, pirate ship, umbrellas and towels are gum paste. Everything else (water, trees) is icing.
After the cake was finished, I took lots of photos (photography being one of my other favorite hobbies), and we drove the cake down to the bar where I work. It was a huge cake, and there was no way my roommates and boyfriend would be able to eat it all, so I decided to share with strangers. We let people look at the cake for about an hour before cutting into it. It was really sad to have to cut apart the cake I spent so much time decorating, but it was delicious! Next time, I'm going to have to bring a card describing the process and the reason for baking a cake -- "I made this cake for a contest! It looks like this tshirt from threadless.com! Yes, you can eat everything on it!" Threadless got some good free press!
It was so much fun baking, decorating, and eating my cake! I can't wait to decorate another!
