Description
We've always felt sorry for the poor cactus and balloon in "Impossible Love," so we brainstormed ideas as to how those two could finally get together. Suddenly, it hit us-- marshmallows. Clearly, with the healing power of marshmallows, love was no longer impossible!
The base is made of two 8" white cake layers, and filled with pink-tinted buttercream. We carved out a hole in the center to shore up the cactus, which is made of rice krispie treats and covered in fondant. The spines are blunted with mini marshmallows, and the balloon, also made of rice krispie treats and fondant, is pinned to the cactus with toothpicks. The balloon's string is made of a Twizzler.
We'd never worked with fondant before, so kneading the food coloring in and trying to smooth the fondant layer over the bumpy rice krispies was an adventure. Plus, the rice krispies kept drooping so we had to concoct an emergency batch of royal icing to keep everything in place! Finally, we piped the new, improved caption on the cake base ("Possible Love") and mounted the cactus and balloon onto it. The cake turned out fantastic-- our very own Romeo and Juliet, united at last...
