Hairwolves cake by Meredith Newcom

Description

So I thought I would try a different technique for this cake, sort of a scratchboard style with painted icing on top of orange fondant. It didn't quite work out the way I expected (the fondant was really soft), so I used a combination of scratchboard with sculpted fondant on top, working back and forth to achieve the details.

I started with a basic chocolate sheet cake which I carved into the shape of the design. I used the leftover pieces to create a relief on top of the cake. I then frosted the cake with buttercream frosting and covered the entire cake with orange marshmallow fondant. I then added more fondant in strips and used a fork to create the fur. I lightly brushed a purplish-black icing thinned with water on top and scratched away details with a toothpick. For the faces I added more orange fondant on top of the fur and added eyes and painted the details with a toothpick. There are probably quite a few things I would have done differently if I were to do this particular cake again but I had fun with the process & it was quite tasty too!
