Flat Fight cake by Meredith Newcom

Description

So the last night of the cake competition and I decide to experiment. (Cue ominous music now). I decide to 1. use an untried cake recipe and 2.Make my own buttercream frosting. I began to be concerned when the size of the batch of cake batter seemed rather small, but I thought "maybe it'll expand." Well I ended up with a VERY flat cake. But seeing as "Flat Fight" was the theme of the cake I figured I just go with it.

I actually started the creation of the characters of the main event first, sculpting them in marmallow fondant. For each cake I entered I wanted to try something different and so for this one I really wanted to try painting with food coloring thinned with vodka. I enjoyed the process & would definitely do it again.

Back to the really flat cake. The time to make the homemade frosting arrived-but let's just say it wasn't pretty. No pics but it DID happen. Store bought it is! I colored the icing and frosted the cookie-er cake. Finally I applied the fondant fighters. Frosting frolicking ensued.
