Description
This was my second Thread cake entry. I chose it be cause I liked how colorful it is and I thought it would make a cool cake. I started out by making a 9x13" chocolate cake from scratch. After icing it, I covered it in white fondant. I painted the fondant with food coloring and vodka. It proved to be more difficult than I had anticipated to get the faded effect, but I got it eventually.
Once it dried I painted on the man and the fish with black food coloring. Than, where the design was black, I covered the cake in black fondant. I bought black fondant because it's almost impossible to make black fondant and adding to much food coloring gives the fondant a bitter taste.
Than I added the zipper detail and painted it to match the background. The actual zipper and the water ripple were made of fondant and the zipper pull is made of gum paste. I painted on more detail into the background and added some silver highlights and I was done. The entire process took about 10 hours. The cake tasted delicious.
