Description
When I saw the sepia-toned 8 Bit blues, I thought, being Summer and wedding season, it might be fun to try my hand a traditional groom's cake. This cake is almost entirely chocolate. It's a dark chocolate "cavity-maker" cake (a doctored up boxed mix), with from-scratch chocolate-rum mousse filling and chocolate-rum ganache glaze. Definitely a dessert cake!
Mario, his cohorts, and the pipe are all made from different colors of Wilton chocolate melts (white, light, dark, and green), then painted with a gel/vodka mixture, then pearl dusted. The mic and stand are pearl dusted gum paste. The plants are organic strawberries (because you can't have a traditional groom's cake without strawberries!) and white and green tinted chocolate.
My husband and I sculpted the figures over an evening. We actually had a Mario building contest to see who's would go on the cake. Mine won, by the way. :) Then I made the cake over an evening, then decorated it as soon as the glaze cooled down enough to not melt the figures. It's best served with whipped cream (to cut the sweetness) and a strawberry garnish.
I had a ball making this, and hope you enjoy the pictures!
