Sky Thief cake by Jenni Stotts

Description

Sky Thief is my favourite Threadless shirt design ever! I just love it. (Psssst, Threadless.... reprint, ya?)
I'd wanted to do this design from the moment I saw the contest announced, but I couldn't figure out how I was going to achieve it. I went over a million designs in my head, initially trying to avoid actually using my airbrush. (I'd never used it before this cake, and was beyond intimidated as I've seen more airbrush disasters on cakewrecks than I can to remember!)
In the end, I knew I'd have to get over it, and use it. I think it went rather well! Not bad for a first time using an airbrush on cake.

I cut the silhouette onto a low-tack masking material (which hardly stuck at all to the cake, and resulted in a lot of creative directional airbrushing not to blow it clean off) and went to town with the airbrush. I made the silhouette a bit more crisp by hand-painting it black, and then added royal icing stars.

It's 3 layers of vanilla bean cake. I decided to go with a 6" cake, as we don't eat enough cake to warrant doing larger. It only took a few hours, if I'd have to guess, I'd say about 4. (not including the idle wait times, of course :) )
