Know Your Dinosaurs cake by Elizabeth Ball

Description

Hello! My name is Elizabeth, and my cake-baking cohorts here are Nicole and Julia. We love baking cakes, and we love Threadless, so when we heard about this synergy of the two, we couldn't resist! We commandeered a kitchen and got to work.

Now, none of us had EVER tried anything fancy with fondant or marzipan and the like, so we decided to start with a relatively simple design. We made a round Funfetti layer cake with buttercream icing as a base. We covered it in a layer of light blue marshmallow fondant that we made using a recipe we found online. Then, we blended chunks of green, purple, darker blue, and yellow to use for the dinosaurs, rolled them out, and sketched the shapes out with a toothpick before cutting them out with a knife. We attached the dinosaur shapes to the cake and added the details using black icing and colored sprinkles.

As I mentioned before, we had NEVER ATTEMPTED cake making of this magnitude before, so the process ran a little long. We got started on a thursday afternoon around 2:00 pm, worked until around 2:00 am where we were interrupted by a power outage, and then finished up the next morning. Granted, there was some time in there for going to three different grocery stores, eating dinner out, and lying on the living room rug covered in cornstarch. But we're proud of our little cake, and it was oh-so-delicious! The marshmallow fondant was a big win.

Our pretty little cake isn't much of a competitor for the top prizes, given that the talent level of submissions here is AMAZING, so we convened with our cake consumers to grant it the following awards:

1. Best First Crack at Fondant
2. Most Creative Use of Living Room Furniture in the Baking Process
3. Most Sparkly Representation of Blood and Gore
4. The Roy G. Biv Special Award for Creating a Primary Color out of Another Primary Color

Ladies and gents, it's been a blast. We hope you enjoy LOOKING at our cake as much as we enjoyed DEVOURING it!
