Sugar Land cake by Bethany Davenport

Description

As soon as I found out about this contest, I knew I had to enter. I spent hours looking through all of the designs to find just the right one. "Sugar Land" was my perfect fit; a great concept and a bit of a challenge but something I knew I could tackle.

I made my favorite strawberry cake and set to work. I frosted the cake and covered it with fondant I tinted green. Then I put the smaller cake on top frosted and covered it as well. I made a batch of homemade buttercream icing and used it to do a bead border around each cake.

Then came the hard part, making all of the characters. They are all made of fondant I tinted. It was very difficult because they are so small and delicate, as well as detailed. To get the pieces to stick together (like the faces and arms) I painted a little almond extract on a side and stuck it together. A few of the characters have toothpicks in their centers so i could stick them into the cake.

It took 6 days to make, but that's because I could only work on it during my lunch breaks and late at night because I have a busy work schedule. We are still eating the cake. XP There's so much of it!

Thank you Threadless for the amazing cake decorating contest idea! I had so much fun with it! I hope there is another next year!
