Butterfly Fish cake by Michelle Lapus

Description

Butterfly Fish

This is an interesting design and I like the emphasis on the central butterfly but also the hidden imagery. I love the bright colors. To start, I made a 9"x13" red velvet cake (heavy on the cocoa), and frosted with a green-tinted cream cheese frosting. Since it was green, I also threw in some pandan extract for flavoring. I then cut the four fish out of tinted green fondant and frosted extra details, painting on black gel icing for lines. For the butterfly I wanted the colors to stand out and be bold so I used yellow-tinted fondant for that portion, painting yellow gel icing on top of that, and then painting the orange edges on top of that. So this is a single layer cake just frosted on top. This cake was baked, cooled, frosted and decorated in one long night/early morning, and took about 5 or 6 hours in total. This cake went on to the birthday girl Valerie!
