Recording Seal
So first things first: I made this 3D cake last-minute using leftover king-sized cupcake pieces I had (chocolate cake). Also, I had been debating whether to do 2D (FBCT) or 3D (carving). The printout I had at hand, therefore, had the image flipped just in case I wanted to do the buttercream transfer. Coincidentally, I needed to kill time while waiting for my double batch of banana bread to finish in the oven (no, that will not become another Threadcake).
I decided on a 3D cake, only too late realizing my seal was facing the wrong way. Oh well! Also, now I know why people use rice krispies treats rather than cake for sculpting! My first attempt at carving was the perfect shape but didn’t hold up. After that fell apart, I bulked up the little guy and tried again. You can see both in the photos. I didn’t have a real plan, just using the Nestle cocoa frosting recipe and whatever leftover colored fondant I had from my previous Threadcakes from this year. It was messy, frustrating at times but of course a fun ending. I used up the Wilton black icing I had used previously for my “Liberty” cake and I think it turned out okay for a “salvage” piece. I used chocolate Pocky sticks to dowel (with the exception of one drinking straw; toothpicks failed too), and molded chocolate for some of the records as well as fondant.
That’s it for me this year. I’m stopping at #6. :)
Best,
Michelle
