Halfling and Wizard cake by Kristi Caccippio

Description

I'm pretty sure I don't need to describe to anyone why I would want to put this on cake. I love hand painting cakes, and for this design, it was exactly what I wanted to do.
I started by making some Funfetti cake, Italian Buttercream, and Chocolate Fudge Buttercream filling. After I had the cake put together (one 8" round cake split and filled), I covered it in white fondant. I let the fondant dry out for half a day before I started painting. Then I printed off a flipped image so I could trace out the key parts on parchment paper. I transferred the design to the cake and started painting. To paint this cake, I used a mix of powdered food color, petal dust, gel food coloring, and vodka. I started with all the yellows and oranges first, then moved to the grays and browns. I painted in the greens, and finished everything off with the blues. Then I went over all the defining points with a very thin brush and black "paint".
To finish this cake off I wanted to keep it simple so I transferred it to a board the same size as the cake and wrapped a black ribbon around the bottom (secured with a pin).
I LOVED making this cake. :)
I'm not quite sure how long this cake took me to do, specifically because my dog and cat were insistent I pay attention to them instead, but I would guess around 3 hours?
