A Piece of Cake cake by Lien Sanchez

Description

When I heard about the Threadless contest, I knew immediately which cake(s) I wanted to make. I've always thought the "A Piece of Cake" design very clever and after all, this a CAKE competition.

I started with a sheet of vanilla buttermilk cake, cut it into the cake slice shapes, and then filled and iced it with buttercream. My goal was to recreate as many of the T-shirt design details as possible, from the chocolate glaze on top down to the cake crumbs on the board. The letters were made from white and dark modeling chocolate, the cherry from red gumpaste, and the glaze is a ganache that I carefully dripped onto the letters. When I thought I was done, my husband pointed out that I had forgotten to create the image of the "A" on top, so I took out my creme brulee torch and melted a bit of the ganache and used my small spatula to create the negative space of the letter A.

This was such a fun project, I can't wait to start on the next one.
