I've been in love with the "Byebi" design ever since I first saw it on Whatisblik.com. I love the graphic and the bright colors and was even considering buying the wall decal for my room (and then I moved but that's another story) so when I heard about this challenge, I knew that I had to create something with this design. With the beautiful birds and swirls, I thought that this would make a lovely wedding cake. ;-)
I didn't want to just copy the design straight onto the cake so I decided to add a bit of interest by making the female bird (well, I think it's the female) look like she's hovering in air. When it came time to attach the female bird to the cake, it held surprisingly well (probably because there was two points of contact); the "bye" quote, however, wouldn't stay put no matter how I manipulated it. So I went to plan B, which was to stick it directly on the cake, which turned out to be better aesthetically anyways.
The differenet colored swirls had to be piped in layers and was a painstaking process but definitely well worth it in the end. The cake itself was composed of one 10"x4" round (Devil's food cake w/ fresh strawberries & cream) and two 8"x4"inch rounds (Devil's food cake w/ raspberry mousse and lemon coconut cake w/ vanilla cream cheese buttercream) stacked together to make one large 8"x8" tier.
I have to say that this is definitely my favorite cake that I've make thus far. Hope you guys like it as much as I do :)
